For this week’s donation, we are supporting Black women’s health. Black women have a 2 to 3 times higher maternal mortality rate if under the age of thirty, 4 to 5 times higher if over the age of thirty, and in NYC specifically, are 8 to 12 times more likely to die due to complications of childbirth than their white counterparts. These numbers are reflected across the board regardless of education or economic status.
Far too many women experience traumatic childbirths and with numbers so vastly different, it’s imperative we bring those mortality numbers down but also help to provide support with pre and postnatal healthcare for Black moms.
The Black Mamas Matter Alliance is grounded in the human rights, reproductive justice, and birth justice frameworks, and incorporates respectful maternity care tenets. They serve as a national voice and coordinating entity for stakeholders advancing maternal health, rights, and justice. The Black Mamas Matter Alliance provides technical assistance, training, and capacity building for grassroots organizations, maternity care service providers (e.g. clinicians, midwives, doula networks and community health workers), academia, and the public health industry.
The Black Women’s Health Imperative has programs to address the most pressing health issues of Black women and help advocate for policy change. They want to ensure access to quality, affordable, and innovative approaches to provide comprehensive health care for Black women and girls, equitable and adequate response for public health emergencies, sufficient diversity in clinical research, and sustained financial support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
